Who is New Horizons Service Dogs?
New Horizons was founded by Janet Severt, who herself is a service dog user along with a dedicated group of volunteers. Our headquarters are located in Orange City, FL, which is about 25 minutes north of Orlando. We have puppy raisers throughout the state of Florida and in other states as well. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and we are an accredited member of Assistance Dogs International. Our mission is simple:
- Provide quality, trained service dogs to people with disabilities;
- Educate the public and raise awareness regarding the needs and concerns of persons with disabilities;
- Provide on-going support to the recipient to assure a successful working partnership.
We train our service dogs primarily to assist people in wheelchairs and others with mobility problems. We also have dogs assisting in other working situations such as adult living facilities, nursing homes and private homes, depending on the dog’s temperament and abilities. Please click on “Meet our dogs” in the left margin for more information.
We mostly use Golden and Labrador retrievers. We welcome inquiries from breeders who would like to donate good quality dogs or breeding services to our program. We have had dogs donated that are from quality lines, but have mis-markings or other faults that disqualify them from being show dogs. We focus more on soundness, health, and temperament.
