New Horizons is a registered non-profit organization run by people who want to provide the disabled with quality, well-trained service dogs. It costs money to purchase, train, transport, and care for puppies in training. It also costs money to run our office and training program. Monetary donations in any amount are always gratefully welcomed. We are also in need of donations for our building and operating funds, quality puppies and/or breeding stock and veterinary services. Puppyraisers normally bear the main brunt of puppy expenses, so we welcome sponsorships of dogs where you can help defray food, medical, and training costs for a specific dog, and we will provide you with updates on how the dog is doing in its training. If you, your business, service group or other organization would like to sponsor a dog, please contact us for more information.

The backbone of our organization is the loving, dedicated puppyraisers who raise the puppies that become service dogs. If you have love to spare and a desire to improve the life of a disabled person, you can become a puppyraiser. You do NOT have to be a dog trainer or have a lot of experience to be a puppyraiser. Most puppyraisers will tell you that they felt totally ignorant when they raised their first dog, despite many having had one or more dogs in their life before that time. Many people say, "Oh, I could never raise and love a dog and then turn it over to someone else!" But that's exactly what puppyraisers do, most more than once. Because as painful as it is to turn in a puppy, there is no prouder moment than handing the leash to the client after training is complete and knowing that because you were able to let go, you gave a disabled person a better life. Not to mention you get to do it all over again with another puppy, and again and again.

We welcome inquiries from Scout troops, 4-H groups, or any group or organization that would like to form a puppyraiser group. Remember, the more puppyraisers we have, the more dogs we can train and the more disabled people we can help.

Another way you can help not just New Horizons, but service dog partners everywhere is to educate yourself on service dogs and their role in the life of a disabled person. Make sure your business is service dog friendly and make all your employees aware of the laws. Not only can you help a disabled person, you can save your business time and money from a resultant lawsuit. Make sure you have the proper signage on your business, and educate others if you see an access violation in progess. Many business owners are truly ignorant of the law, but this does not excuse them. Also, educate friends and family, especially children, about service dog etiquette and follow through with it yourself.
